Wednesday Wonder: Virtual Reality 11/15/17

What is virtual reality?

The term virtual reality is used to describe a three-dimensional, computer generated environment which can be explored and interacted with by a person. That person becomes part of the virtual world or is immersed within this environment and whilst there, is able to manipulate objects or perform a series of actions.

How does it work?

There are a range of systems and devices that can be used for virtual reality. From a simple pair of cardboard goggles and a smart phone all the way up to a headset, omni-directional treadmill, and gloves. All of the different systems and devices are used to stimulate your senses in various ways to give you the feeling of being immersed in the virtual reality world.

What can you do with it?

Depending on the device or system you are using there are many things you can use virtual reality for. You can get a pair of virtual reality googles for $10+ and use a smartphone app to watch documentaries, play games, and explore different countries, terrains, and even planets. Google cardboard are a great and affordable way to try virtual reality but are not going to be as immersive as something more complex like Playstation VR. Playstation VR goggles are made to fit comfortably on your head without having to be held. They are adjustable and have headphones attached to give you a more immersive experience. With Playstation VR you can become a part of your game.

What kind of virtual reality have you experienced? If you haven’t, stop in and try on some Google cardboard! They are great for your first experience and learning how to use virtual reality.
